First Facts

Welcome to IndependenceFirst's FirstFacts monthly e-newsletter containing Employer Updates about the advantages of diversifying your workforce by hiring people with disabilities! It's a quick read with useful tips for business...

FirstFacts for September:

• Mentoring is a good way for people who are interested in career exploration to learn more about their chosen field of interest
• The mentoring model is used for students and professionals with and without disabilities
• National Disability Mentoring Day started in 1999 by the White House, as a program to increase the profile of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is celebrated every October.
• Disability Mentoring Day is celebrated in every state plus Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 14 other countries.

Companies that are interested in including people with disabilities in their diversity initiatives, can start by participating in Disability Mentoring Day .  Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) is a one-day event in which high school students with disabilities get the opportunity to job shadow someone in the field  or career of their choice and employers get the opportunity to mentor a student or young job seeker. Come be part of Disability Mentoring Day on October 21st this year and have the wonderful experience of mentoring a young student or job seeker with a disability for a day (2-8 hours), showing them the ropes of your job and being a mentor!

IndependenceFirst has been the Milwaukee area coordinator of this event for several years and matched 80+ students last year throughout the Milwaukee Region.  For more information on how to volunteer or have your company get involved in the matchups, call 414-226-8112 V/Relay or akriofske@independencefirst.org
