Getting the most from your income

By Dale Shuster, Communications Manager at SDC

When times are tight, every dollar can make a difference. That is why when tax season comes around, it is important not to spend money needlessly on preparing and filing your tax returns when the same work can be done at no charge. Paid tax preparers can charge several hundred dollars to do your taxes. But there is a more cost-effective alternative available.

IndependenceFirst is teaming up again with the Milwaukee Asset Building Coalition to offer free preparation of state and federal tax forms for the coming tax season. On February 6, February 16 and March 16, trained tax preparers from the Coalition will be at the IndependenceFirst facility at 540 S. 1st Street between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The volunteer tax preparers will fill out and file your tax returns at no charge, as well as help with the Earned Income Tax Credit, Homestead Tax Credit, and returns from previous years.

The team of tax preparers will be at IndependenceFirst to offer their services to any community member whose household income was less than $56,000 during 2012. To learn more about the free tax help, including what to bring, call 414-291-7520 (V/TTY) or visit http://www.independencefirst.org/events/event/828-free-income-tax-preparation.html. Also, please be aware that these services are offered on a first come, first served basis.

IndependenceFirst has been a part of the Milwaukee Asset Building Coalition for a number of years and has helped the program serve thousands of Milwaukee County residents. During its eleven years of service, the free tax program has filed more than 117,000 tax returns at no charge and returned more than $132 million in tax refunds and credits to local residents.
