Independent Living/ Employment Skills Classes

for People with Disabilities

Class Cost:  FREE

Tuesdays 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Tuesday October 16th

 

Intake/Introduction

 

Class will participate in an “ice breaker” activity so that participants can get to know the instructor and one another better.

 

Tuesday October 23rd

 

Feeling Overwhelmed? Deal with that Stress!

 

Stress can make you feel bad, physically and emotionally.  Learn about what stress is, how it can affect you, and how to manage it in a healthy way.

 

Tuesday October 30th

 

Expectations of Beginning a New Job

 

Many times people find that getting the job was the easy part.  Now they have to keep the job.  Discussion about the things you always wanted to know about how to keep your job.

 

Tuesday November 6th

 

Dollars & Sense. . . Using Your Money Wisely

 

Does your income allow you to meet all of your needs?  Could you use a little more money?  Learn how to track your expenses, identify some ways to save money, how to develop a budget, how to gain an understanding of credit and debit cards and how to make good purchase decisions.

Interviewing Techniques

 

What are your rights as a person with a disability who wants employment?  What questions can an employer ask you?  How do you handle illegal questions and other tough interview questions?

Work Ethics, Job Accommodation & Disclosing a Disability

 

Discuss positive work ethics, useful job accommodations and how to discuss your disability with your employer and co-workers.

 

Tuesday November 27th

 

“I Feel Good”:  Understanding Self-Esteem

 

Learn how your self-esteem affects the way you live, how you think, act and feel about yourself and others and how successful you are in achieving your life goals.  Get some ideas on how to build up your self-esteem.

 

Tuesday December 4th

 

 Guest Speakers Certificate Presentation

 

Get tips from successfully employed people with disabilities and area employers.  This is your chance to ask those important questions.

 

 

Environmental Chemical Sensitivities

For the safety and comfort of those with chemical and environmental sensitivities, IndependenceFirst requests that persons attending agency-sponsored events please refrain from using any perfumed grooming products such as scented soaps, deodorants, perfumes, colognes, and heavily scented fabric softeners.  It is also essential that we maintain a smoke-free environment; therefore in addition to not smoking in the building, we ask that you refrain from smoking in paths of travel and doorways.
