Internship Program - Building Work Skills

IndependenceFirst offers paid internships for people with disabilities who have little-to-no work experience, who may be completing some kind of training program and want to enter or reenter the workforce. Internships are typically three to six months in duration, and participants are paid.

The provision of paid internships gives people with disabilities an opportunity to establish a work history by demonstrating their ability to perform under realistic working conditions in the real world of work. IndependenceFirst offers internships in a wide area of occupational fields ranging from entry level clerical positions to skilled and professional fields such as accounting, computer science, counseling, and management. Interns are placed in jobs directly related to their area of training and skill level either at IndependenceFirst or with businesses in the greater Milwaukee area.

Besides some job skills training, interns also receive job seeking and job retention skills training. Assistance with placement efforts are part of our effort, as well as follow up with employers to the degree necessary to ensure job retention.

Funding is needed for paying interns. A scholarship program with naming opportunity is an available option for someone who wishes to support the internship program indefinitely.
