Dear Friends,
At IndependenceFirst, we pride ourselves on being the “First” resource on access and independent living for the four-county metroMilwaukee area. In 2008, we took some big steps to reinforce that commitment. In June, we opened a new satellite office inMilwaukee’s central city. This office, located in the Cherry Court housing complex on N. 24th Street, provides culturallysensitive support services to central city residents with disabilities, with an emphasis on youth and those who have been victims of violence.
The Central City Satellite office is now the fourth of our outreach offices.Others are located inWaukesha,Grafton and West Bend. In October, after three years of careful planning, IndependenceFirst moved our main headquarters office to 540 South 1st Street. We required more office space due to an increase in staff and services over the past ten years. Equally important, the location and renovated building offer enhanced accessibility for both consumers and staff. The new site offers better access to transportation services and ample accessible parking. The building incorporates many universal design features such as:
• no step, no threshold entry
• access to the automatic door via waist level hand-plate or footrest level kick-plate
• reception area with multiple counter levels to facilitate standing & seated guests
• meeting rooms with height-adjustable tables & chairs & a video phone for deaf
• workroom with wheelchair accessible copier, 360 degree circulation around work
tables and base cabinets with pull-out shelving
• accessible workstations for staff and guests
• carpets and laminate floors outlined in brown for way-finding
• rest rooms with no door entry, accessible stalls with automatic flushing,
touchless dispensers and accessible counters
• accessible kitchen and bathroom that can be used for skills training
In this expanded, technically advanced facility that is easier to locate, access and maneuver through,IndependenceFirst can provide more efficient and effective services to the thousands of individuals with disabilities we serve each year. We also hope this state-of-the-art facility will be used as a model for local businesses to emulate as they improve their workplaces to accommodate their own employees and clients with disabilities. We welcome your calls to arrange a tour. In 2008, IndependenceFirst provided in-depth services to 2,234 people with disabilities. An additional 4,808 received information and referral services. Some highlights and program outcomes are included in this report. Our continuing growth, especially in an economically challenging time, is a tribute to a committed Board of Directors, a hard-working staff, dedicated volunteers, allied community organizations and the financial support of corporations, foundations, contractors and government agencies.
All of our major donors are listed in the final section of this annual report. We thank you all.
Sincerely,
John Mitchell, Board Chairperson
Lee Schulz, Executive Director
Accessibility for PeopleWith Disabilities:
Accessibility contract services, advocacy initiatives and technical assistance continue to expand.Again this year, extensive site surveys were completed under contract for barrier removal for several businesses, including the high profile Potawatomi Bingo Casino expansion.
Technical assistance/advocacy was provided to several accessibility-related projects including Milwaukee City Hall’s restoration project elevator and restrooms, BayshoreTowncenter, Milwaukee Public Library; Head Start, Columbia St. Mary’s, Metropolitan Builder’s Association Home Expo, Sam’s Club, Election Commission,Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Milwaukee Downtown Plan to name a few. Community education via Radio Public Service Announcements regarding accessible parking were broadcast on a variety of radio stations.
IndependenceFirst’s access work isn’t limited to Milwaukee. For example, in PortWashington, staff worked on a variety of public projects to ensure access for
youth and adults with disabilities. Also, staff worked with WaukeshaMemorial Hospital in an effort to improve availability of hydraulic lift examining tables.
Staff continue working with the U.S.Dept. of Justice Attorney’s office to enforce laws at various Milwaukee public areas to ensure that people with disabilities have the
same access as those without disabilities.
Youth Services:
Program expansion for youths with disabilities resulted in some extremely positive results to help kids become powerful self-advocates, set goals and develop independent living skills to ensure goal attainment.
85 students with disabilities participated in Disability Mentoring Day after being matched with 40 different local employers who provided a job shadowing experience
at their workplaces. This program gets students with disabilities focused on career exploration in a field of interest to pursue employment goals.
The 4th Annual Youth Leadership Summit consisted of two week-long sessions, one in June and one in July. 40 area students with disabilities participated. Participants
reported that the training they received increased their leadership and advocacy skills. One past participant became a presenter at this year’s Summit and now is a
YouthMember of the IndependenceFirst Board of Directors.
PROGRAM FOCUS: WE OFFER A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS AND SERVICES.
THE FOLLOWING ARE A FEW HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2008:
POTAWATOMI BINGO CASINO DONATED $54,888 TO OUR YOUTH PROGRAMS THROUGH MIRACLE ON CANAL STREET.
ServicesTo the Central City:
The IndependenceFirst Central City Satellite Office opened to provide direct services to people with disabilities who live in the Central City. There is a particular focus on working with people with disabilities who were victims of violence
which caused their disability in providing peer support groups and independent living skills training.
Computer Recycling Program:
100 low-income people with disabilities who otherwise couldn’t afford a personal computer, received a donated, refurbished computer with free Internet Access from our Computer Recycling Program. With the importance of the internet and computer skills for information-gathering and job skills, these computer matches will connect people with disabilities to many opportunities.
IndependenceFirst POWER LUNCH presented by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation:
IndependenceFirst’s annual special event, had approximately 800 business leaders and persons with disabilities in attendance to learn about the untapped potential of people with disabilities as a workforce, marketforce and group that contributes to the diversity of our community. Former Major League Baseball pitcher Jim Abbott was the featured speaker.
Wheelchair Sports & Adaptive Recreation:
76 sports/recreation opportunities were offered to adults with disabilities, and 113 sports/recreation opportunities were offered to youth with disabilities. These opportunities offer positive self-esteem, skills including sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership and physical wellness patterns for people with a variety of disabilities. One of our former youth wheelchair athletes took home a Gold Medal from the Paralympic Games in Beijing for Women’s Wheelchair Basketball and is working on starting a competitive Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team at UW Whitewater!
Looking Ahead to 2009…Our 30th Anniversary Year:
IndependenceFirst will continue to build on 30 years of independent living skills training, peer support, advocacy, coalition building, and direct service provision to ensure that people with disabilities can achieve their life’s goals of living independently in the community. Over 50% of our current 90 onsite employees have disabilities themselves, as do our Board of Directors. We continue to set an example for the community and achieve excellent outcomes in our programs. We have made a great deal of progress inMilwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha Counties.
Thank you for your support throughout the past 30 years. Without our Board, staff,
volunteers, corporate and foundation support and individual donations, we couldn’t have accomplished all we have to date. Unfortunately, there is still much to accomplish and barriers to be removed for people with disabilities so they can fully participate in the workforce and throughout the community as citizens. Your 30th Anniversary year support will continue to afford people with disabilities the services and programs that we uniquely provide.
