Independent Living Skills Training

A "core" service, IndependenceFirst offers both one-on-one and group independent living skills training. A variety of life skills classes on diverse topics are scheduled at different locations throughout the year. In addition, persons with disabilities may work one-on-one with an Independent Living Coordinator to improve his/her ability to live independently in the community.

The purpose of independent living skills training is to assist persons with disabilities to improve their ability to live as independently and healthy as possible in the community.

Goals

  • To educate persons with disabilities on relevant issues.
  • To teach self-advocacy, assertiveness and empowerment to persons with disabilities.
  • To increase self-awareness and independence in persons with disabilities.

  • Arrange own transportation to and from meetings.
  • Be respectful of others in the Program.
