Computer Training Program

The Computer Training Program provides basic and intermediate computer skills development classes to persons with disabilities. Examples of classes include Beginning Typing, Introduction to MS Word, and Internet Basics. The computer-training program provides instruction on everyday programs and adaptive techniques that can be used the make the computer a more accessible environment.

The purpose of the Computer Training Program is to provide people with disabilities basic computer skills to gain a better understanding of the computer and how it may benefit them.  Computer training may last up to 16 weeks, preparing participants to attend more traditional programs should they want further training.

Goals

  • To teach persons with disabilities basic computer skills.
  • To assist persons with disabilities to identify assistive technology and alternative techniques for using the computer, if needed.
  • To help persons with disabilities identify how they will use the computer.
  • To prepare person with disabilities for participation in community-based computer-training programs

This program is available only in the Milwaukee County Office. This program does have a waiting list for services at this time.

Available only to persons with disabilities who are unable to obtain computer training through other funding sources such as DVR.

Type of Assistance/Information
Staff assesses learning style and accessibility needs through a periodic skills assessment. Class activities were developed for students of all ages and skill levels. Instructor modifies activities based on the person's area(s) of interest.

An individual with a disability, who is unable to obtain computer training from another funding source such as DVR.

Types of classes Offered (Individual or Group)
Classes are often provided in one-on-one and in small groups. Current and past students may participate in an open lab session held once a week outside their regularly scheduled class.

Consumer Responsibilities/Expectations
Consumers will attend weekly classes for instruction in basic computer skills and take an active role in the program. There is an attendance policy for this program.
