Wheelchair Sports & Adaptive Recreation

IndependenceFirst provides and partners with other groups to provide, quality programs focusing on instruction, sportsmanship and most of all - FUN!  We are excited to offer activities for all levels - first timers, old pros, adults or kids who want a leisure outlet and those looking for playful competition.  IndependenceFirst prides itself in offering a variety of programs in several community locations with an effort to include all who want to participate.

Program Goals

IndependenceFirst does a number of things in our Wheelchair Sports & Adaptive Recreation Programs:

  • Is a resource for community recreation providers advising how to make their programs more accessible.
  • Increases the number of healthy recreational and sports opportunities for people with disabilities.
  • Promotes integrated leisure activities in the community.
  • Provides sports programs that meet individuals' need.
  • Educates people with disabilities about their options and resources.
  • Provides volunteer opportunities to those interested.
  • Collaborates with other organizations to combine efforts and resources for programming.

Eligibility to Participate

IndependenceFirst Youth Programs are appropriate for youth ages 5-15 years unless otherwise noted in the program description.

IndependenceFirst Adult Programs serve those 16 years and older. 

Everyone is welcome to participate - our activity flyers will note the availability of extra wheelchairs for inclusion of family members and friends who also want to "get in the game!"

Costs to Participate

Each program has its own fee/cost.  Program costs range from $5 - $40.

IndependenceFirst believes in providing services to all who desire to participate, financial assistance for program fees, and possible transit fees are available on request

 

Donations above and beyond the program fee are also welcomed and help pay the costs of those who are unable to.
