Disability Mentoring Week

Event location: Workplaces throughout the community
Event date and time: October 15 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Mentors and students with disabilities pair up for job shadowing.

October 15-19, IndependenceFirst will once again pair students with disabilities with area employers to promote career exploration through interactive job shadow experiences during Disability Mentoring Week! IndependenceFirst is the local coordinator for this national program hosted by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD).

Participating students identify three career fields they are interested in and are matched with an employer in one of the chosen fields to learn what that career entails.

Mentors spend anywhere from two hours to a full day showing students what it’s like to work in that particular career and offering advice on what it takes to land a job in that field. Mentors come from all industries, from banking to auto repair to the performing arts, and everything in between.

The deadline to participate in 2018 has passed, but please contact us if you are interested in participating in 2019 and we will contact you when the planning for 2019 begins.
