What is a Service Enterprise?

A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills across all levels of the organization to successfully deliver on its social mission.

Why We Went Through the Certification Process

In January 2014, IndependenceFirst seized the opportunity to be part of the Service Enterprise pilot program facilitated by the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee. The process of becoming a “Certified” agency was an opportunity for us to assess how well we were doing, as well as better understand what areas of our volunteer program needed improvement. We are proud to report that in May of 2014, IndependenceFirst was designated as the first nonprofit agency in the state of Wisconsin to be certified as a Service Enterprise organization. In order to maintain Service Enterprise status we had to apply for re-certification in 2017 and will need to do so every four years thereafter. In 2017, we were the first organization in the state to be re-certified! Although the process is extensive, we are committed to setting a standard for volunteer programs statewide!

Service Enterprises Benefit Volunteers

  • Service Enterprise organizations are increasing the impact of volunteers, and making the most of the volunteer's investment of time.
  • The volunteer onboarding process has been examined to help ensure that the volunteers will have a positive experience.
  • Service Enterprise organizations set a high priority on volunteer engagement in all aspects of the organization. This can lead to more creative and more meaningful volunteer opportunities, including projects for skills-based volunteers.
