March is National Developmental Disability Awareness Month

According to “National Today,” Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, “seeks to raise awareness about including people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life. It also creates awareness of the difficulties that people with disabilities still face in fitting into the communities in which they live.”

In March, the Resource Center put out a display of assistive technology that can be used as accommodations for a wide variety of Developmental Disabilities. One of our favorites it the Time Cube, a simple timer that can be set for 5,15,30 or 60 minutes. To use it, rotate the cube so the desired amount of time is facing upward.  The timer will make a sound when the time has elapsed. A similar device called the LaCrosse Technology Cube Timer has an optional visual alarm for individuals who are sensitive to noise. To turn it off, rotate the cube so that the “0” is facing upward. This timer can be useful for managing study time, managing break and lunch times on the job, etc.
