Details:The City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission (ERC) will hold its September meeting at Independence First on Thursday, September 24, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The meeting is open to the public and free to attend, and community members are encouraged to participate. Public comment will be an important part of the meeting, giving residents, people with disabilities, advocates, community organizations, and other stakeholders an opportunity to share their perspectives directly with the Commission.
The primary focus of the meeting will be a proposal from the City of Milwaukee Department of Compliance and Engagement to reduce the Equal Rights Specialist and ADA Coordinator positions to half-time and combine their responsibilities into one full-time position.
The Equal Rights Commission will hear an overview of the proposed staffing changes and receive public comment before Commissioners discuss and consider a resolution opposing the proposed reduction and consolidation and supporting dedicated, full-time capacity for both functions.
The Equal Rights Commission works to protect human rights, equity, and equality for people who live, work, and visit Milwaukee. Its responsibilities include community education, public outreach, compliance monitoring, and governance.
Because the proposed changes could affect the City’s capacity to address disability access, ADA compliance, equal rights, and discrimination concerns, people with disabilities and disability advocates are especially encouraged to attend and make their voices heard.
