Alternatives in Mobility (AIM)

Wheelchair Repair & Refurbishment Program

Keeping people moving when mobility equipment breaks down.

Independence First’s Alternatives in Mobility (AIM) program helps people who rely on complex mobility equipment remain mobile and independent through repair, refurbishment, recycling, and redistribution of power and manual wheelchairs throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.

For many wheelchair users, equipment failure can mean weeks—or even months—without reliable mobility. AIM works to reduce those delays by providing repair support, refurbished equipment, and reusable components whenever it is safe and practical to do so.

The AIM program focuses on extending the life of mobility equipment and helping individuals maintain independence while waiting for repairs or replacement equipment.

Services may include:

  • Power wheelchair and complex manual wheelchair refurbishment
  • Recycling and reuse of mobility equipment
  • Basic equipment repairs and adjustments
  • Replacement of common components such as batteries, chargers, joysticks, wheels, arm pads, and footplates
  • Temporary or alternate equipment when available
  • Parts recovery to support additional repairs

All services are dependent on equipment condition, safety standards, and program availability.

Who AIM Serves

The AIM program serves individuals across the Milwaukee area and Southeastern Wisconsin who rely on complex mobility equipment and are experiencing equipment challenges or delays.

Healthcare providers, case managers, rehabilitation professionals, and community organizations are welcome to refer individuals to the program.
