Transportation Advocacy Team

The Transportation Advocacy Team works to improve access to transportation for people with disabilities throughout the Milwaukee metro area. Reliable and accessible transportation is essential for participating in work, school, healthcare, and community life, and this team focuses on making sure transit systems meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Team members collaborate to identify transportation barriers and advocate for improvements to both transit and paratransit services. This may include discussing bus routes and accessibility features, paratransit services such as Transit Plus, pedestrian access to transit stops, and other transportation programs and projects in the region. The team also supports individuals who want to get involved in transportation advocacy and provides opportunities to learn about local transportation planning and policy.

Community Advocacy Teams are open to people with disabilities, family members, advocates, Independence First staff, and anyone interested in improving accessibility and transportation options in our community. Meetings are held in a hybrid format so participants can attend in person at Independence First or join remotely through Zoom. A call-in option is also available.

Meeting Schedule:
4th Wednesday of each month
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
On Zoom or In-Person at Independence First in Milwaukee
540 S. 1st Street, Milwaukee, WI 53204

Anyone interested in participating in the Transportation Advocacy Team should contact Brian Peters at bpeters@independencefirst.org or 414-937-5912. Brian can also assist with accommodation requests for participation.
