The Independence First building at 540 South 1st street is in the heart of Walker’s Point and Milwaukee’s Fifth Ward. With two large parking lots, the converted bakery/factory is a location that is easy to use, and welcoming to all. The building is 100 % accessible with a zero threshold entryway, automatic doors, motion sensor lighting, completely accessible restrooms, and color-shaded hallways for low vision guidance.
There are two accessible kitchens, conference rooms, and a large meeting area that holds up to 100 people. Our space is commonly used for non-profit meeting space, news conferences, community events, and candidate forums.
In 2019 and 2020 the Independence First partnered with the City of Milwaukee to become an accessible polling site for elections.
