Celebrating the Vocational Rehabilitation Act Amendments --RSS Feed

By Kristin Stern, Youth Leadership Coordinator

This Friday, August 3, marks the 64th anniversary of the passage of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1954. Signed into law by President Eisenhower, this act increased federal funding for vocational rehabilitation programs. The act also expanded the program to include people with intellectual disabilities and mental health disabilities. The act provided funding for research and demonstration grants, extension and improvements grants, and rehabilitation facility development.

In addition to expanding to serve people with types of disabilities that had not previously been included in the program, the increased funding allowed state vocational rehabilitation agencies to expand into new geographic areas, develop new aspects of the rehabilitation programs, purchase equipment and hire more rehabilitation counselors. Vocational rehabilitation has come a long way since 1954 when this historic act was passed. Today these programs are constantly improving and expanding to assist people with disabilities in finding meaningful employment.
